Award Winning Farm in Uganda’s Best Farmers (2020)

“A number of corporates are in the gardens now partly because of the continuous exposure to high-quality farming, its value, and benefits we have given through these competitions.”

Philip Kalera from Gomba district emerged overall winner of the 2020 Uganda Best Farmers competition. Kalera, 46, the director of Gomba Next Generation Model Farm, was among the 13 winners who were unveiled and honoured during a virtual event held at the Vision Group head offices in early in 2021.

Under the competition, organised by Vision Group in partnership with the Netherlands Embassy, dfcu Bank, KLM Airlines and Koudjis Nutrition BV, the winners will share sh150m and enjoy a week-long all-expense paid study tour to the Netherlands.

A high-level five-member jury, headed by former agriculture minister Mrs Victoria Ssekitoleko, selected the winners.

All the 13 best farmers won a study trip to the Netherlands. The top three farmers, however, won substantial farm investment facilities worth 100 million shillings. For coming out top, Kalera received a sh50m cash prize, a plaque and certificate.

“I am so excited that farmers are being recognised for the noble work they are doing to feed the population. Few people appreciate our efforts, which is not good,” Kalera said.

“Farming is a rewarding business if you focus and give it time. I am happy, especially for women who have embraced this great profession. I, however, call upon Government to help educate farmers on quality and also help us access foreign markets,” Kalera said.

When he visits the Netherlands, Kalera said he will focus on value-addition and acquiring more machinery for his farm.

More than 500 Acres of Agricultural Land

Starting with 200 acres of Land in 2003, along with 500 Ankole Long Horned Cattle, the farm had expanded to 500 acres with a major shift to exotic cattle and high mechanised farming by 2018.

Gomba Next Generation Farm has embarked on an aggressive shift to modern machinery and equipment which includes installation of high grade maize milling machinery, modern cattle shades and feeding booths, mechanized silage and hay production as well as introduction of animal reproduction and breeding technologies.

Maize Grain Production ;- including milling and supply at affordable prices to schools, resellers, exporters and stockists. The farm grows more than 600 Acres of High Grade Maize crops every year.

Since 2003, we have been a trusted and reliable maize ingredient partner specializing in providing consistently good food and ingredients throughout the supply chain. Every day, we do what’s good. Good for consumers, for our farmers, for our manufacturers, resellers and distributors.

Green Banana (Matooke) ;- Plantations specializing in growing and supply of organic bananas in large quantities for all season supply to schools, factories and food processing plants, restaurants, stockists and resellers.

Hay and Silage Production ;- From cutting grass when it is young, to planting good quality maize seeds, we are able to produce silage that can supply all the energy and protein requirements of growing animals using the modern silage and hay production technology.

Cattle Reproduction and Breeding ;- Local breeds from Uganda have low production and low growth rates. But with artificial insemination now in place, farmers will get better animals with better growth and high production rates.

Our bull herd accommodates different breeds of bulls for dairy, dual purpose and beef purposes from which semen for artificial insemination is extracted and processed and stored. These bull breeds were imported from countries like South Africa and Kenya.
